Susan von Daum Tholl

What is your most memorable travel experience?
I lived in Germany and Austria for about three years when researching and writing my dissertation in art history, but I think spending Christmas day in Bethlehem during a three-week visit to friends in Israel might be the most memorable.
What is your educational background?
BA in English, MA in medieval Art History, MPhil and PhD in early medieval manuscripts. After teaching full-time, I went to library school for an MSLIS.
If you could go back and change your field of study in school, what would you change it to?
I wouldn’t change what I’ve done, but I’m still tempted to go to law school.
If you were not a librarian, what else would you want to be?
Since, I’m also an art historian, maybe my third career would be as a rare book or antiques dealer.
What attracted you to Emmanuel as a place to work and how long have you been here?
Emmanuel is a special place, committed to its mission. I’ve been here since February 1997 and continue to feel more and more in tune with the environment.
What authors or types of books are your favorites? Why?
Anything that is very well-written, for instance, Haruki Murakami’s After Dark and Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett—very different, but both are excellent writers. I’ve just finished Thomas Friedman’s That Used to be Us, which gives one pause about America’s ability to meet the demands of globalization.

What is your most memorable travel experience?
I have to pick two! Last summer, I took a course studying libraries in China, during which the class visited libraries of all sorts, including academic, in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. On the way back home, I had a layover in the desert city of Dubai for 24 hours, plenty of time to ascend the world’s tallest building. Also, two years ago, I took my bike to Japan for an amazing journey ultimately covering 900 kilometers of Japan’s rugged coast and tremendous mountains, carrying all we needed with us and camping along the way. This trip was an amazing opportunity to practice my limited Japanese, visit remote villages, and, of course, to enjoy plenty of Japanese food!
What is your educational background?
I spent my undergraduate years at the University of Connecticut, where I completed an individualized major called Art and Society, a convergence of my interests in photography, art history, literature, and sociology. I have continued taking courses here and there, dabbling in Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese history and art history, and computer programming. I am now completing a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.
If you could go back and change your field of study in school, what would you change it to and why?
I would have spent more time learning a second language. Languages provide a chance to really learn about another culture, to travel and fully experience new things – all very important for anyone who, like me, is curious about the world!
What has been the most memorable moment while working in the Emmanuel College Library?
I haven’t been here very long, but I’ve really enjoyed helping students’ research paper topics. Chatting with the students is fun, and it’s great to learn more about their topics with them.
If you were not a librarian, what else would you want to be?
A computer programmer, or a professional cyclist, though one is more attainable than the other.
What attracted you to Emmanuel as a place to work?
I’ve been here since September 2011. The library seems like an energetic, dynamic place to work. The archives are being organized and digital resources being developed, so we are actively creating a repository of Emmanuel’s history. Also appealing is that education is very much placed in the fore of the library’s mission. The library’s staff is made up of friendly, resourceful people who are eager to assist Emmanuel’s population in its pursuit of knowledge. These things establish a wonderful atmosphere to work in here in the Cardinal Cushing Library.
What authors or types of books are your favorites? Why?
I enjoy Modernist writing: James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and others who began exploring the power of writing to render individual perception by fragmenting narratives. Right now, though, most of my reading is about libraries!
