Follow-up to Paul Levy’s lecture

March 17, 2010

On Tuesday, March 16, Paul Levy, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, shared his enthusiasm for writing with the Emmanuel College community.

Mr. Levy stressed that writing is a reflection of the author and so it is imperative to cultivate good writing skills. He targeted the ability to write persuasively and concisely as essential to a good writer. This takes practice! Mr. Levy recommended the The Declaration of Independence and President Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address as excellent examples of well-written documents that are both persuasive and concise.

Mr. Levy also touched on the importance of excellent written and oral communication skills in the workplace. When questioned about why good grammar and spelling matter, he pointed out that a résumé that lacked those two qualities would not be taken seriously.

Finally, Mr. Levy spoke about how he uses his blog, entitled “Running a Hospital”, as a management tool to effect change within his organization and beyond. He showed statistics proving that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, health insurance corporations, and other hospitals, who are BIDMC’s competitors, are regularly reading his blog. Please visit Mr. Levy’s blog at http://runningahospital.blogspot.com.

Why are you writing?

March 12, 2010

Why are you writing?

. . . because I have a paper due . . .
. . . because my grade depends on it . . .
. . . because I’m exploring new ideas . . .
. . . because I have something to say . . .
. . . because my writing matters to others . . .

. . . because my writing can transform the world. . .

Paul Levy, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and former Executive Director of the MWRA, responsible for the Boston Harbor Cleanup, uses writing as a tool to transform and manage and teach.

JOIN us to hear Mr. Levy speak about how he writes
to effect change and how you can write to make a difference.
