…what was the highest selling book title in America fifty years ago?

According to the August 21,1960 edition of the New York Times…

The number one selling fiction title was Hawaii by James A. Michener.This was the first week for this title to move into the number one position!

The number one selling non-fiction title was Born Free by Joy Adamson. As of August 21st, 1960 this title had been on the New York Times’ Best Seller List for 15 weeks.

Fun fact: This week brothers Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy inhabited the 12th and 13th positions, respectively, on the non-fiction bestseller list.
