This Week in History…

…what was the highest selling book title in America fifty years ago?

According to the September 18th edition of the New York Times…

The number one selling fiction title was Hawaii by James A. Michener. The number one selling non-fiction title was Born Free by Joy Adamson.

This week Hawaii hit it’s 43rd week in the number one position and Born Free hit it’s 19th week!  They are definitely worth a peek!

Fun fact: This was the debut week on the bestseller list for author John Gunther’s book, Taken at the Flood.  This avant-garde reporter made a critcal discovery linking tobacco sales and women, a discovery that he seemed to regret upon further research.

You can find this title in the Emmanuel Library’s Main Collection!

Check out the New York Times Archive located on the Library’s Website for more fun facts!
